Coffman Cove is located on the Northeastern Coast of the Prince of Wales Island. It lies at approximately 56° 01' N Latitude, 132° 50' W Longitude. The town was named by Lt. Comdr. A.S. Snow, USN, after Lt. Dewitt Coffman, in 1886. The town has 138 residents and can be accessed by two roads, boat, float plane, or ferry. Coffman Cove was founded as a logging camp in the 1950's, but the economy is now centered mostly around tourism. The town has been incorporated since 1989. Coffman Cove is the only small community on the north end of Prince of Whales Island that is paved. The Community provides a variety of services. These include a boat launch, harbor, car rental, general store, fuel station, library, school, post office, liquor store, public telephones, public restrooms, public showers, laundry mat, RV park, lodges, bed and breakfasts, souvenirs, and basic auto/tire repair. A few of the attractions that bring tourists into the community include; fishing, hunting, Honker Devide canoe route, camping, Coffman Cove Archaeology Project and the escape from the bustle of every day big-city life.
